The deZEE Story

Born from the Sea.
Crafted by Hand.
A Story Since 1913.

In the coastal waters near Antwerp, where the North Sea has shaped lives for generations, a unique tradition began in 1913.

Strong in the sea, beautiful on land.

During the warm summer months, local fishermen would set sail before sunrise, spending long days at sea in search of herring, cod, and mackerel. Their most trusted tool was a simple yet brilliant lure known as a spinner — a flashing piece of metal that reflected sunlight beneath the waves, attracting fish from remarkable distances.

The fishermen called them “the little flashes of silver.”

As winter arrived and the sea grew rough, the boats remained in harbor. The fishermen returned to their workshops, where they repaired nets, maintained equipment, and handcrafted new spinners for the coming season. Each lure was shaped by hand, polished to perfection, and often engraved with personal symbols believed to bring luck and safe journeys.

Over time, something unexpected happened.

The elegant shape of the spinner and the fish it attracted became more than a fishing tool. It became a symbol of the sea, freedom, perseverance, and prosperity. Fishermen began creating small miniature versions from brass, silver, and later gold — not for fishing, but to wear close to their hearts.

Our atelier today — craftsmanship passed down through generations
Our atelier today — where every deZEE Fish is shaped by hand.

These handcrafted fish charms were gifted to wives before long voyages, passed from father to son, and carried as tokens of protection and good fortune.

What started as a practical object evolved into a timeless piece of jewelry.

More than a century later, deZEE continues this tradition.

Our iconic fish is inspired by those early fishermen who transformed a humble lure into a meaningful symbol. Every deZEE piece celebrates craftsmanship, adventure, heritage, and the enduring connection between humanity and the sea.

Notes from the Atelier

Materials

The Five Segments

Every deZEE Fish is composed of five inlaid segments and one eye. Choosing their materials is not decoration — it is composition.

Read from head to tail, the five cells of the fish form a sentence. Some of our clients compose it chromatically, moving from warm amber into deep sea green. Others compose it biographically: a stone for each person, each place, each chapter. There is no wrong grammar — but it helps to know the vocabulary.

Amber is fossilised resin, tens of millions of years old — light caught and kept. It is the material closest to what deZEE itself does: preserving a moment in a warm, translucent body. Mother of pearl is the opposite temperament — nacre grown layer by layer inside a living shell, cool and luminous, the traditional talisman of those who worked at sea.

The woods — walnut and ebony — bring warmth and privacy. No two grains are alike, and a wooden segment ages with its wearer, deepening in tone. Meteorite is the rarest voice in the range: nickel-iron that travelled through space for longer than the Earth has had oceans, etched to reveal the crystalline Widmanstätten pattern that cannot be forged and cannot be repeated.

Then there are the waters: turquoise and lapis lazuli, the blues that gave the fish its meaning as a symbol of luck and safe return. Malachite and emerald close the palette in green — the colour of arrival. The eye, set in diamond, ruby or sapphire, is traditionally chosen last: it is the piece that looks back at you.

Begin with one segment that is non-negotiable — the material that carries the meaning — and compose the remaining four around it. The Atelier lets you try every combination before you commit a single gram of gold.

Your Story

A Memory, Set in Gold

Any segment of the fish can hold something that never appeared in a jeweller's catalogue: sand, petals, fabric, paper. This is how a personal inlay works.

The most valuable material in our workshop is never the gold. It is a teaspoon of sand from the beach where a question was asked. A petal from a bouquet that could not be kept. A few threads from a coat that someone wore all their life. Words, written small, on paper. These are the things clients bring us — and the reason the deZEE Fish has an empty cell waiting in the configurator, called Your Story.

The craft lies in making the ephemeral permanent. The material is dried, stabilised and sealed inside the gold cell under a clear, hard layer, so that it can be worn daily — through rain, sun and years — without fading into loss a second time. What emerges is not a picture of the memory. It is the memory itself, physically present, at the wrist.

Two promises govern this work. The first is discretion: what a segment contains, and what it means, is known only to you and to the hands that set it. We treat the story of every inlay as strictly confidential. The second is respect for the irreplaceable: we work with the smallest portion of the material that the craft allows, and everything that is not used is returned to you with the finished piece.

If you are unsure whether something can be inlaid, ask before you send it — most things that can be dried, cut or ground can be set. Some of the most beautiful segments we have made began with a client writing: "I don't know if this is possible."

It usually is.

Terms & Conditions

Last updated: 3 July 2026 · Version 1.0

1. Seller

These Terms & Conditions govern all orders placed with Flemish Jewelry House BV, Quellinstraat 49, 2018 Antwerpen, Belgium ("deZEE Antwerp", "we"). Contact: dezee@dezeeantwerp.com, +32 3 555 12 34.

2. Ordering and payment

A quote request through our Atelier is not yet an order. After reviewing your configuration we send you a personalised offer. Your order becomes binding when you confirm the offer and pay a deposit of 50 % of the price by bank transfer, based on our deposit invoice. The remaining balance is payable by bank transfer before the finished piece is dispatched or collected. All prices are in euro and include Belgian VAT.

3. Production and delivery

Standard bracelets are crafted within approximately 4 weeks from receipt of the deposit. Personalised pieces — engravings, personal inlays and bespoke configurations — are scheduled through our workshop waiting list; before you pay any deposit, we inform you of the estimated production slot and keep you updated on its progress.

We deliver worldwide. Insured shipping is included in the price. Transit time is added to the production time and depends on the destination. For deliveries outside the European Union, any import duties, customs fees or local taxes of the destination country are not included and are borne by the customer as the importer.

4. Right of withdrawal

For standard, non-personalised items you have the legal right to withdraw from the purchase within 14 days of delivery, without giving a reason. The piece must be returned unworn and in its original packaging, by insured shipment; the direct cost of returning the piece is borne by the customer. We refund all payments within 14 days of receiving the return. Personalised pieces — engraved, containing a personal inlay, or made to your specification — are exempt from the right of withdrawal under Article VI.53, 3° of the Belgian Code of Economic Law (Art. 16(c) of Directive 2011/83/EU). We tell you before you order whether your configuration is personalised.

5. Statutory warranty

All pieces are covered by the statutory two-year conformity warranty under Belgian and EU consumer law. Please report any lack of conformity without undue delay after you discover it.

6. Lifetime warranty and service

Beyond the statutory warranty, every deZEE piece carries our voluntary lifetime warranty against defects in craftsmanship and in the materials we set — for as long as the original owner keeps the piece. This warranty does not cover normal wear, accidental damage, misuse, alterations or repairs by third parties, or the natural ageing of personal materials you entrust to us for an inlay. It does not limit your statutory rights.

Our lifetime service includes free inspection and professional cleaning of your piece, and free replacement of the cord, up to twice per calendar year. Contact us to arrange service at our atelier or by post; shipping the piece to us is borne by the customer, and we cover the return shipment within the EU. Work outside the scope of this warranty and service is quoted before we begin.

7. Personal materials

Materials you entrust to us for a personal inlay are treated as strictly confidential, used solely to craft your piece, and any unused portion is returned to you with the finished piece.

8. Retention of title

The piece remains our property until the price has been paid in full.

9. Complaints and disputes

Complaints can be addressed to dezee@dezeeantwerp.com; we respond within 14 days. These Terms are governed by Belgian law. As a consumer you may also use the European Online Dispute Resolution platform at ec.europa.eu/consumers/odr or contact the Belgian Consumer Mediation Service (Consumentenombudsdienst).

5. Who receives your data

Your data is accessible only to the persons within our house who handle your enquiry, and to service providers acting on our behalf: our form-delivery service, our e-mail provider, our website host and — when you pay online — our payment service provider, which processes your payment data under its own responsibility; we never see or store your card details.
